Vice President Kamala Harris Says US’ Support for Israel Is ‘Unwavering’

The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, has recently tweeted her support for Israel amid tensions in Palestine.

Last Thursday, just a day before Israeli soldiers stormed Al-Aqsa and attacked Palestinian worshippers, Harris took to Twitter to re-confirm her support for the country.

“I spoke with President Herzog of Israel to extend Passover greetings,” she said. “This morning I expressed condolences over Israeli deaths from recent terrorist attacks. Our support for Israel’s security and self-defence is unwavering.”

The White House then released a follow-up statement stating that “The Vice President expressed support for continued efforts to reduce tensions.”

Reduce? By deliberately ignoring the rights of Palestinians? By supporting the illegal occupation of their land? Though frustrating, Harris’s love for Israel is not new. Throughout her political career, she has always voiced her support for the country and even gone as far as visiting illegally occupied territories in the area many times. Over the weekend, it was even reported that she served wine that was produced in an illegal Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank during a Passover seder [a Jewish meal served during Passover].

The news of her tweet came right before tensions in Palestine reached an all-time high yet again. It was reported that 150 Palestinians were left injured after Israeli forces brutally attacked Muslims praying in Al-Aqsa.

Medics at the scene claimed that the number of people injured has continued rising as the armed officers took to the surrounding areas of the holy site to continue their assault on worshippers during the month of Ramadan.

According to Palestine Red Crescent, most of the Palestinian injuries on Friday and Saturday were incurred by rubber bullets, grenades and beatings with police batons.

Videos of the attacks were posted to social media, with many left speechless watching the intense violence used against unarmed civilians. In one video, you can see an Israeli officer wearing riot gear running up to a woman holding a camera and striking her with a baton. She screams out in pain, while others around her shout for him to leave her alone.

Another video saw IDF soldiers shoving elderly Palestinian men into a huddle, in an attempt to get them away from Al-Aqsa.

“0% regard, respect, humility, humanity for anyone but their own Israeli apartheid selves. If they can shamelessly do this to the elderly in public, in front of cameras, at places of worship, during holy events. What when camera off,” wrote one user.

The United States has been an avid supporter of Israel for years and according to the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), they have sold $7.2 billion in weaponry and military equipment to the country in just the past decade alone.

Outraged but never surprised. It’s America, what else would we expect?

May God lighten the burden for Palestinians and finally free them from the torment of these oppressors.
