“1 in 5 Brit Muslims’ sympathy for jihadis”, That’s what The Sun’s headline sounded like this Monday.
This statement is based on a poll. The respondents were allowed to say whether they had “a lot” “some” or “no” sympathy with people traveling to Syria.
But does traveling to Syria necessarily make you a jihadist? There are examples of people going to Syria to fight against ISIS with the Kurds. So this poll isn’t correct, but it made the headlines of The Sun on Monday and everybody was talking about it.
The Independent had an interesting article about why the poll is misleading. You can read it here.
#1in5muslims
As a Muslim you know that the statement is bullshit. If we just look in our surroundings, we know that finding one Muslim who supports jihadists is impossible.
Muslims on Twitter were mad and made the hashtag #1in5muslim trending. They were tweeting funny made-up facts about Muslims. Enjoy!
