The Nationality and Borders Bill: Here’s What You Need to Know

The British government has recently voted through a bill that could potentially allow them to strip people of their citizenship. Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, has been slammed for proposing the controversial Nationality and Borders Bill that is allegedly going to be used to crack down on immigration.

According to reports, the bill aims to:

  • Prevent illegal entry to the UK, meaning people can’t come into the country without a visa, in an attempt to scupper criminal trafficking networks.
  • Remove people from the UK if they have no right to be there.
  • Protect those who are in genuine need by creating a new asylum system.

But what a lot of people fear is that this massive power surge will allow the government to abuse their power as Clause 9 states that Brits could be stripped of their citizenship without any prior notice at all. In some cases, this could leave them completely stateless.

Activists and organisations all around the country have been raising awareness about the potential drawbacks of the bill, with many stating that it will disproportionately affect the BAME community.

BLMUK, the official page for the United Kingdom’s Black Lives Matter movement, said that it will affect at least every 2 in 5 people of colour in the country.

David Davis, the Conservative MP for Haltemprice and Howden has described the bill as “counterproductive,” adding: “As a former shadow home secretary, I know that our intelligence agencies need powers to deal with terrorism and the many other threats we face. But those powers must be proportionate and balanced against the rights of the individual against an overbearing state.

“Not only are these excessively broad new powers not necessary to tackle terrorism, but they are counter-productive.”

So what can we do to stop it from becoming law?

  • Share this post to raise awareness.
  • Write to your local MP demanding they vote against the controversial bill.
  • Sign this petition to have the matter debated in Parliament.

If we work together, we can get the bill repealed.

Now, the news comes after it was recently reported that twenty-seven people died, including a pregnant woman and three children, after their boat capsized while crossing the English Channel. Reports have also stated that the migrant crisis is at an all-time high so the government is hoping that these tougher sanctions will deter people from trying to make the journey to the United Kingdom.

But let’s get real for a second because what people like Priti Patel forget to consider is that why would these people be making the dangerous journey in the first place? Oh, that’s right, it’s because countries like the United Kingdom and the United States have gone in to invade other places under the disguise of a knight in shining armour and absolutely torn it apart. And then they have the nerve to create bills like this one.

Here’s a little bit of advice: If you don’t want to accept any more refugees, then stop creating them. Simple.
