Netflix Released a Movie About the True Story of An Egyptian Politician Who Was a Spy for Israel During the ’70s

The Netflix Original movie ‘The Angel’ about a real-life story of an Egyptian man that worked as a spy for Israel in the 1970s has been released this month.

Netflix has released the movie ‘The Angel’ this month. It’s a movie about the real-life story of Ashraf Marwan, the Egyptian national and the son-in-law of the at that time Egyptian president, Gamal Abdel Nasser. The movie is based on the book ‘The Angel: The Egyptian Spy Who Saved Israel’ written by Uri Bar-Joseph.

Ashraf Marwan was a spy for Israel for many years. Because of his connections with the top officials of the county, he had access to very sensitive information. When Egyptian and Syrian forces launched an attack on Israel in 1973 on the holy day of Yom Kippur, Marwan was the one to give the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad the information about it. Because of his tip he gained the code name “Angel” by Israel.

The probably most famous spy of the Middle East died in 2007 when he fell from a balcony of an apartment in London. It is not clear why he chose to be a spy for Israel, but it is believed that he did it in order to save the millions of civilians that would die during a war. For both countries, Egypt and Israel, Ashraf Marwan is seen as a hero.

The movie is directed by the Israeli director Ariel Vromen and stars Marwan Kenzari, the Dutch actor who has been part of several Hollywood movies including ‘Ben-Hur’.
