With Halal Tourism as a booming industry, and the number of Muslim travelers increasing immensely, countries have been making effort to attract these tourists. New Zealand, with its beautiful nature and scenery is one of these countries.
Finding halal food is probably the hardest part of travelling to a country with a low Muslim population. As a Muslim tourist in New Zealand you can not only explore the breathtaking nature and culture, experience the wildest adventures, but also eat delicious halal food without worrying.
To make it easier for the visitors, New Zealand released its first Halal Food Guide in 2016 to help Muslim tourists with finding suitable restaurants. This guide has been renewed in 2018 and lists now over 500 eateries, bakeries, grocery stores and takeaways from across the country, including certified halal outlets, halal outlets owned by Muslims and vegetarian eateries. For this project New Zealand decided to work together with the Federation of the Islamic Association of New Zeeland (FIANZ) and the Kiwi Muslim Dictionary.
On the guide it says: “Through this collaboration we hope to offer our Muslim visitors a memorable visit to beautiful New Zealand.”
Here are some eateries you should check out when you are in New Zealand!
Pedro’s House of Lambs
At this restaurant the lamb is not only halal but also gluten free. You can find Pedro House of Lambs in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown.
If you are more into fish, than this is what you should try out. Poké Poké serves the popular Pacific/Maori dish, the poké bowl. This is a salad that consists of raw fish and a huge variety of fresh ingredients. Sounds healthy, right? You can find Poké Poké in Auckland.
Black Cat Café
And if you are more into cats and coffee, this is the place to be. The coffeeshop is located in Dunedin and is 100% plant based and gluten-free.
The Halal Food Guide can be downloaded from the official tourism website of New Zealand and is completely free.
