Muddassar Ahmed: The Asian Muslim Philanthropist, Working to Counter Food Poverty In London

The Struggling Community in Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets, London is one of the poorest boroughs in London with the highest  child poverty rate in the UK. The emergence of COVID-19 only worked to exacerbate these numbers and the horrible conditions of those residing there.

In recent months, Tower Hamlets has experienced higher than average death rates from Coronavirus. For underfunded minority ethnic neighborhoods, the combination of financial disparities and pre-existing health problems has been a catalyst in the spread of the coronavirus. The staggering death toll is a result of how the pandemic has amplified pre-existing structural inequalities for the majority Bangladeshi and Somali communities in Tower Hamlets.

Tower Hamlets has the largest MUSLIM population in the UK.

Whilst we should of course send charitable funds abroad, we can not ignore the Muslims that are starving in our country!

Food banks have become a lifeline for those struggling during the lockdowns and are unable to work and bring in an income for their families and friends.

Muddassar Ahmed Leading the Way for Change in Bow

Muddassar Ahmed, an entrepreneur, and social activist was recently appointed as the first Muslim AND the first Asian chairman of Bow Food Bank based in Tower Hamlets. Bow Food Bank is one of the biggest independent food banks in London and they are currently feeding over 750 adults and 1,100 children, every single week, even during national lockdowns!

Muddassar has taken it upon himself to fundraise £10,000 to counter food poverty in this area of East London

In his words;

“Many of these people have never used a food bank before, but their circumstances have changed: some aren’t able to afford childcare, some are on zero-hour contracts and some have been made redundant. Since the start of the pandemic, the number of people that rely on our charity each week has increased by 800%.

I urge you to join me to raise much-needed funds for the Bow Food Bank so we can continue to support the most vulnerable members of our community. This is not about deciding what to eat tomorrow but knowing whether you will have anything to eat at all.

My target is to reach £10,000 in one month, starting today. With your help, I believe we can make this happen. We all have a responsibility to help our community. Small steps can make a huge difference.”

Faith and Social Justice

A poignant Hadith comes to mind when we reflect on Muddassar’s efforts;

Abu Hurayra (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,

“Allah says: ‘I asked you for food and you did not feed Me. “

He (His slave) will say, ‘Lord, how could I feed You when You did not ask me for food and You are the Lord of the universe?’

He will say, ‘Do you not know that My slave so-and-so asked you for food and you did not feed him? Do you not know that if you had fed him, you would have found that action with Me?

{Reported by Imam Bukhari in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad, Hadith #517}

Allah SWT is asking you for food! Will you answer His call?

In the mixed society we live today, we went looking for the ideal platform for Muslims. And of course, we didn’t find it. So we made one ourselves.
