What comes to your mind when you think of Morocco or Marrakesh? Is it the breath-taking nature, the colourful spices, the endless details, or the amazing hospitality?
Marrakech is the fourth largest city of the Moroccan Kingdom and one of the most visited by tourists in the country. The city, also known as the Red City because of the red city walls, is a melting pot of myths, rooted traditions and modern influences. For many local and foreign artists and designers Marrakech is a source of inspiration and creativity. This year, Marrakech has become the first African Capital of Culture. In 2020 events will be held all over the city celebrating the culture. But what makes the city this amazing? Here are some things you should know about!
From storytellers to French couture
Some say, there is no Marrakech without the traditional storytellers at the Djemaa el Fna, the place where everything comes together. From musicians to snake-charmers, you’ll find everything you’ve ever imagined in this place that never sleeps.
Not so surprising is the fact that many western artists enjoy working in Marrakech. The French designer Yves Saint Lauren even decided to make it his second home. He once said: “In Morocco, I realized that the range of colors I use was that of the zelliges, zouacs, djellabas and caftans. The boldness seen since then in my work, I owe to this country, to its forceful harmonies, to its audacious combinations, to the fervor of its creativity.”

In 2017 the Musée Yves Saint Laurent opened its doors displaying couture pieces and telling the story of how the designer fell in love with the city. Next to the museum you’ll find the fascinating Majorelle gardens. Once you enter the garden you’ll be taken to another world of beauty. You’ll find all the hypnotizing colours that represent the city.

But Yves Saint Laurent is not the only one who fell in love with the city. In 2019 Dior decided to present their 2020 spring/summer Resort collection in one of the many hidden castles of the city.

Local fashion designers have also been showing world-class creations. Carpet dealers turned designers Samad and Malek are creating together as Art Ouzarzate. Together they give traditional clothing a modern touch while keeping the embroideries.
Another designer you must know about is Zakaria Bendriouichi. His handbags are definitely a statement piece and will give your look the perfect finishing touch.
When it comes to photography and art, Hassan Hajjaj is the man to think of. Creating pieces that are out-of-the-box is his specialty.
In Marrakech it is not possible to not mention the amazing paintings. There are many art galleries all over the city bringing together local and foreign artists.
How about visiting Marrakech this year? You won’t regret it!
