Every fashion-addict is looking forward to the World’s first exclusive Modest Fashion Festival in London. This event will take place on Saturday 21st October 2017. Although there have been several modest fashion shows in recent years, this one will be different; there will be a greater focus on luxury.
We met Sultana Tafadar, a human rights barrister in London and the organizer of this big event. Together with her team, she established a unique and innovative international platform showcasing luxurious and contemporary Modest Fashion brands from across the world.
Can you tell us more about this exclusive event?
The London Modest Fashion Festival is an exclusive event that will take place on Saturday 21st October 2017 in the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. This time, it will be all about fashion and glamour. We will bring together world-class designers, brands, fashion influencers, professionals, retailers and fashion associations from all over the world. We want to hit the luxury market.
I believe that Muslims, especially in the West, can now afford more, in terms of luxury and fashion, than before; many Muslims are educated and participate in high professions. So we often go shopping but as a modest fashionista, it’s hard to find the right and appropriate clothes. We get really excited when we think we find something beautiful until we discover the deep split in the skirt for example. During Ramadan and before the modest fashion market boomed, several retail stores have tried to implement modest fashion to cater all women. But of course we do not only search for clothes during Ramadan.
The last years, we have seen modest fashion gaining great momentum with top luxury brands. Fashion brands all over the world seem to be embracing the view that fashion does not necessarily entail revealing a lot of flesh. I wanted to stimulate and encourage the modest fashion market and that’s why we started the platform and organized this event.
We want to expand the Modest Fashion consumer base by illustrating that it is not exclusive to those of particular religious and cultural identities, but can be enjoyed by all.
Who are the attendants?
In terms of notable guests attending, there will be royalty, UK celebrities and fashion personalities. The event is sponsored by Bentley, CharlotteTilbury, PennyAppeal, So Jennie, Mozafarian, Bodydoctor, DryBy, Counsel for Leadership and Enchanted. The designers are Amal Al Raissi, Bthaina, Hengki Kawilarang, Mira Indria, Meryem Boussikouk, Raishma and Vivi Zubedi.
Several key faces from the world of British modest fashion are also attending, among them Mariah Idrissi (UK’s first hijab-wearing model) and of course, rising star Halima Aden will be on the catwalk.
There will be also a charity moment for Syrian children, affected by the war, where we hope for a generous support; the money will enable Penny Appeal to make a huge difference to the lives of thousands of youngsters. So it’s a Fashion Festival with a purpose.
What do you want to achieve with your platform and this event?
We want to break stereotypes and pre-conceived notions of the Modest dresser and instead recognise and celebrate their achievements, and to empower and inspire others to combine substance with style. We also want to support, celebrate and empower the inherent rights of all women to make their own choices, sartorial or otherwise, free from external interference and without the need to justify.
