Kaftan Dresses and Turban Headbands: Western Fashion Going Middle East

Summer has started again and suddenly I have “no clothes” for summer (this probably sounds very familiar to many girls). As I make my way to work or home, I pass shopping streets and always check for new things. When you don’t like to wear a lot of skirts or tank tops during summer but don’t want to feel like you’re trapped inside a volcano, it’s sometimes hard to find what you want.

But lately something has caught my eye. So-called gauze dresses, kaftan dresses, even turban head bands. At a certain point I was walking past Forever 21, thinking: “Wow, this looks like something my mum wears at home”.

Fact is that the Muslim population is a considerable part of the West. Whether you are aware of it or not, retail stores seem to give this a place in their collections.

Not only this Middle Eastern style gets me excited for summer. Comfort is a must and the long and light trousers and dresses inspired by fashion from the seventies is what we see in stores today as must-haves.

Designers like Chloé, Cavalli and Ferretti, and celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Debra Messing, Uma Thurman… made many feel like being teleported to the charms of the Middle East.
