Hasan Minhaj Becomes First Indian American To Host A Weekly Show On Netflix

The famous comedian and actor Hasan Minhaj is all set to host his own weekly comedy show on Netflix, later this year, making him the first Indian-American host. Netflix has committed to a 32 episodes as of now.

From Public Speaker College To A-List Comedian

Minhaj was born into a Muslim family, originally from Aligarh, India. His parents settled down in California, where he was raised. Growing up, Minhaj was not much into comedy, but found his passion in debates and public speaking. After seeing videos by Chris Rock, he was inspired to try his hand at comedy.  Embarking on a try-out in local comedy led him to winning comedy competitions, booking minor TV gigs and now, his first hosting work. Hasan Minaj is currently a Senior Correspondent on The Daily Show, which he joined in 2014 and will remain till the end of July, before beginning work on his new venture. “I’m thrilled to be joining the Netflix family as the country braces for another election season — and like you, I cannot wait to find out who [Russian President Vladimir] Putin picks this time,” Minhaj joked in a statement announcing his association with Netflix. He will also co-executive produce the series.

Minaj, The Muslim Comedian With A List Of Debutes

Debuting as a the first Muslim hosting the 2017 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and later, his first stand-up comedy special debut on Netflix, called Homecoming King, received raving reviews. In addition, Minhaj and his sketch comedy quartet, Goatface, bring their wide-ranging brand of humor to Comedy Central for a one-hour special next year.

Netflix’s vice president of content Bela Bajaria—who is also reportedly the highest-ranking Indian-American executive in the entertainment industry— showed her excitement when she said: “I’ve been a big fan of Hasan’s for many years. He’s a phenomenal writer with distinct points of view and a brilliant performer, who is hilarious both onstage and off. He isn’t afraid to share his thoughtful voice and unique perspective.”

In his yet untitled talk show, Minaj will explore the current and political events with depth and sincerity in his signature comic style and storytelling skills with the sole purpose to entertain us!
