This week, Twitter has been flooding with pictures of parents and their daughters accompanied by the hashtag #selfiewithdaughter. What was it all about? Well, it’s the result of Indian prime minister Modi’s campaign that is part of his “Betu Bachao, Beti Padhao”-campaign, which means “Save the daughter, educate the daughter”. Modi’s selfie campaign wanted to draw attention to gender equality. Due to the patriarchal society in India, many girls are killed at birth because they’re seen as something undesirable. So India’s prime minister came up with this creative idea to put girls in the spotlight.
And it worked! Shortly after Narendra Modi requested parents to share pictures with their daughters and tagging them with the special hashtag, Twitter started to fill up with the most heartwarming images. Mostly proud dads, captioning the photos with sweet and loving messages towards their daughters.

But there’s also the other side of the coin, besides the heartwarming pictures, Modi is known as a social media fanatic, so people are saying that this might be a stunt and that he’s not at all bothered by the sometimes abominable situation for girls. He wouldn’t be the first minister to use a strategic campaign to better his own image. So is it a stunt or a sincere act? Who will tell. All we can say is that it was a huge hit. Even people from outside India started tweeting pictures with their daughters. And the images are just heartwarming to look at.
