A 50 year old man had been dragged out of his house and beaten to death last week by a mob near New Delhi over rumours that his family killed and ate a cow. Mohammed Akhlaq and his son Danish were attacked by the villagers. He died of his injuries while his 22-year-old son Mohammed Danish was admitted to a nearby hospital in a critical condition.
Family members of Akhlaq, denied slaughtering any cow in their small house and claimed the story was cooked up to target them. They also claimed neither the cops reached on time nor their neighbours came to their rescue.
“My brother threw goat’s skin in the garbage dump. But some people circulated a rumour that a cow was slaughtered and an announcement was made from the local temple,” Mohammed Saifi, the victim’s brother, said.
Hundreds of people gathered in front of our house on Monday night and started abusing us,” Asgari (82 year old mother of the victim) told Times of India. “A heated argument followed for 10 minutes after which the agitators turned violent and broke open the main gate. They misbehaved with my daughter-in-law and grand-daughter. They did not even spare me. I had locked myself in the washroom but they broke open the washroom door and thrashed me.” Asgari added, “The attack continued for nearly half an hour, but no one came to our rescue. They brutally thrashed my son and grandson. They, then dragged my son’s body to the road and fled after dumping it there.”
In India, cow slaughter is banned by the Government from this year as the animal is considered sacred for Hindus, who form about 80 percent of India’s 1.3 billion population. Meanwhile , the State Government have announced to give Rs10-20 lakh ($15.000 – $30.000) to the victim’s family. People involved in this mob have been arrested and investigations going on. Due to this incident, Muslims in this place and all over India are now in fear as Human life got less important than a cow for some people.
